Need to Know Terminology III Flashcards
juxtaposition
- placing arguments, evidence, and examples side by side for analysis
- e.g. you claim that pollution is destroying the environment. Deforestation, however, is causing an equal amount of damage
rhetorical questions
- asking a question that doesn’t require an answer in order to make a point
- e.g. does congress truly want American’s to suffer because of policies made here?
hypophora
- asking a question and then immediately answering it to emphasize arguer’s position
- e.g. is there a way to end world hunger? yes, there is: free-will donations
incongruous juxtaposition
- placing contrasting arguments, evidence, and examples side by side to highlight differences
- e.g. my opponent says, “no good ever came from waiting,” and insists we proceed with this law. however, if we enforce this law immediately, a lot of people will lose their jobs
parody
- imitation of a particular writer of genre; usually done comically to highlight flaws
- e.g. some are born not that great, some never achieve greatness, and some escape greatness even when it’s thrust upon them (this example is a parody of the following quote: “some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them” twelfth night by Shakespeare)
repetition
- repeating an idea, word, or sentence structure in order to emphasize a point
- e.g. this is the time. time for what? time to begin. time to succeed
