figurative language
- the use of figures of speech (hyperbole, simile, metaphor)
- e.g. Ted, my friend from grade school, is as hungry as a hippo; in fact, he’s hungry enough to eat an entire cow. He’s a T-Rex in sneakers
imagery
- using language that excites the senses
- e.g. the rich, sugar-brown sand was glossed over with the smooth froth of the waves
hyperbole
- an exaggeration used for rhetorical effect
- e.g. he’ll work himself to death trying to support his family
- e.g. all her brothers were tall as trees
metaphor
- a direct comparison of two unlike things WITHOUT using “like” or “as”
- e.g. Amy’s hope was an amber-colored petal, fluttering away in the wind
- e.g. jim was the strong wall that held his family safe and secure
simile
- a comparison of two unlike things using the word “like” and “as”
- e.g. the skyscraper tumbled like a tower of blocks knocked down by a child
- e.g. she was as dainty as a fairy
personification
- giving human characteristics to non-human things
- e.g. the computer threw a tantrum when i clicked on too many items
- e.g. the phone screamed in my ear
