anecdote
- a short, punctuated story used to highlight a point in an argument
- e.g. when i was young, i put my hand on the stove, and it burned my hand. after that, i didn’t touch the stove
allusions
- a reference to a literary, historical, or biblical person or event
- e.g. 1 my friend, jim, was a tom sawyer by all accounts (this example makes an allusion to the novel Tom Sawyer)
- e.g. 2 I had the patience of Job during the painful ordeal (this example references a story in the Bible about a man famous for his patience in suffering)
antithesis
- a juxtaposition of contrasting or opposing ideas in phrases, clauses, or sentences
- e.g. 1 many are called, but few are chosen
- e.g. 2 the day is born as the night dies
parallel syntax
- sentences that are repeated in structure – usually for dramatic effect
- e.g. on this day, we will not fear. on this day, we will not run. on this day, we will fight
cataloging
- an inventory or list in an argument
- e.g. he has violated his won laws. he has placed soldiers in our cities. he has refused us a fair trial
