What is necrotizing fascitis
A
Necrotizing fasciitis is widespread necrosis of the subcutaneous tissue and flat layers of the fascia and may progress to myonecrosis. This is also called haemolytic streptococcal gangrene and is included in the wet gangrene presentation.

What causes Necrotizing fasciitis ?
A
- Hypoxia caused by NF decreases PMNS (polymorphonuclear neutrophils) efficiency; they do not work well!! Therefore, it can be dangerous and continue to spread and lead to myonecrosis.

What are the symptoms fo necrotizing fascitis?
A
- Symptoms start 24 hours after an injury.
- Severe pain disproportionate to external signs of infection.
- Bacteria spread rapidly, leading to ADVANCED symptoms.
- Ulcers, blisters, swelling and BLACK SPOTS on the skin!
- Subcutaneous gas and foul smell!
- Vomiting/ diarrhoea

What are the red flags for necrotizing fascitis
A
Red flag – symptoms follow wound, childbirth, or surgery.

What is the treatment for necrotizing fascitis ?
A
- Antibiotics
- Keep wounds covered and dry
- Avoid whirlpools, hot tubs, and swimming pools if open wounds eg vibrio vulvnificus.
