Enteroinvasive E.coli (EIEC)
Enteroinvasive E. coli (EIEC) attached to the epithelial then mechanically INVADES and multiplies, causing an inflammatory response within the cells. This can cause bleeding!!
what can inflammatory infections cause ?
- Dysentery – Infection and inflammation of the intestines, which may cause diarrhoea that may cause blood or mucus.

Shigella
- Self-limiting (TYPICALLY) is not always in children and the elderly.
- faecal- Oral transmission
- Can lead to shigella dysenteries

- Gram Positive
- Strict Anaerobe
- Toxin-mediated disease
- Fever
- NO nausea or vomiting
- Blood stool occurs
- faecal inflammation
What different symptoms might you see between virus and bacterial GI infections
With virus
- Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea are common!
- Fever may occur.
- BUT bloody stool and inflammation are typically absent!
