Diverticulitis – Inflammation of the diverticula / Infection
What is La place law ?
La place law – The sigmoid colon is the smallest diameter and is, therefore, has increased pressure, which is why it’s more susceptible to bursting.
What are the symptoms of Dievrticulitis ?
- Lower left quadrant pain
- Mucus
- Constipation
- Diarrhoea
Complications of diverticulitis

- Perforation
- Peritonitis
- Abscess
- Fistula (formation to the bladder)
- Obstruction
Diagnosis of diverticulitis ?
Diagnosis
- CT
- Colonoscopy
- Lab tests
- Check for infective diverticulitis via fever, WBC, CRP and ESR
Treatment for diverticultiis ?
Treatment
- High fibre diet
- Analgesia
- Antibiotics for complicated diverticulitis (7 Days)
What casues diverticulitis
Common
Anaerobes including
- Bacteroides
- Pepto streptococcus
- Clostridium
- Fusobacterium
Facultative anaerobes:
- Escherichia coli (Gram -ve)
- Streptococci (Gram +ve)
