What is gangrene ?

A
  • Death and decay of part of the body due to deficiency or cessation of blood suppy.
  • Common after extensive skin and soft tissue injury eg open fractures, surgery, burns, and trauma.

What is Dry gangrene ?

A
  • (NON-INFECTIVE)
  • Due to ISCHAEMIA eg reduced blood flow
  • Diabetes, raynuads, atherosclerosis, peripheral vascular disease.

What is wet/most gangrene ?

A
  • Infective
    – Swelling and blistering/ wet.
  • Acute onset
  • Fever
  • Swelling, pain, blistering, pus
  • Smelly discharge
  • Crackling noises when you press on affected area
  • A line between healthy and damages skin

What is GAS gangrene

A
  • (INFECTIVE) – Extensive tissue gas formation (BUBBLES) non ordorous. Has ulcerations.
  • Tachycardia
  • Low-grade fever
  • Swelling and oedema
  • Serosanguineous exudate
  • Skin bronze to blue black
  • BLems and haemorrhagic bullae
  • Hypotension and renal failure in late stages.
