Henry VII
- Simnel- 1486-87 ( claimed to be the Earl of Warwick)
- Warbeck- 1491-97 (claimed to be the Duke of York) They were particularly threatening as they had a stronger claim to the throne than Henry VII.
Edward
- Mary I in the Northumberland rising in 1553. This was particularly threatening to Edward as she had a strong claim to the throne.
Why was nobility important in Irish rebellions in particular?
- They were the leaders of the Clans which meant they could mobilise large numbers.
Why was nobility support important to rebellions? + examples
- It gave the rebellion legitimacy and authority.
- Sometimes nobles claimed they had been pressurised or threatened to lead the armies but this was most likely because of the severe punishment the nobility faced when rebellions were put down.
- The Cornish got Lord Audley to persuade Lord Darcy to lead the tax protest. The Pilgrims besieged Pontefract Castle to persuade Lord Darcy to join.
