What factional rebellions occurred under Henry VIII?

A

Amicable Grant Rising:

  • Anti-Wolsey faction in court made little effort to collect the tax and used the rebellion as an excuse to sir up further unrest. This allowed the opposition to spread in an attempt to get Henry to oust Wolsey as minister.

Pilgrimage of Grace:

  • Aragonese faction wanted to regain influence, as the rebellion attempted to remove Cromwell as chief minister. Many of the leaders of the rebellion had links to Catherine of Aragon.

What factional rebellions occurred under Mary?

A

Lady Jane Grey:

  • Could be argued that faction was a minor cause, as Northumberland wanted to shape the succession in order to retain influence.

Wyatt’s Rebellion:

  • Rebellion was intended to be a four-pronged attack on the capital, under the leadership of individuals who would have lost influence in the event in the event of the Spanish Marriage.

What factional rebellions occurred under Elizabeth?

A

Northern Earls:

  • Northumberland and Westermoorland were losing influence in court, and locally in the North. This was because Southern councillors apart of the Cecil faction began to dominate court. This caused them to plot in order to get Mary Queen of Scots onto the throne.

Earl of Essex

  • Essex, a former favourite, had been suspended from the privy council and banned from court. He organised a demonstration in London, in an attempt to regain influence from the Cecil faction.
