NATOPS - Landing Gear Flashcards
What hydraulic system powers the landing gear?
HYD 1
How are the landing gear held up when retracted?
Mechanical uplocks
How is emergency extension accomplished?
Via gravity using the EMER GEAR handle
What ensures that the gear doors open and close in the correct order during landing gear extension and retraction?
Hydro-mechanical sequencing system
How much force is required to actuate the solenoid and unlock the detent in the landing gear handle?
3.5-8 lbs
How much force is required to override the detent in the landing gear handle?
20-50 lbs
When is each green indicator light illuminated?
When its respective landing gear is down and locked
When is the amber indicator light illuminated?
When the landing gear doors are not up and locked
What does the red warning light in the gear handle indicate?
If the handle is up, the red light is illuminated unless all landing gear and doors are up and locked.
If the handle is down, the light is illuminated unless all landing gear are down and locked regardless of door position.
What activates a red “WHEELS” warning light and “GEAR” audio warning?
When LDG GEAR handle is not set to DN, and the throttle is below 95% N2 and either
- Altitude is below 7200’ MSL and airspeed less than 170 KTS, or
- The SLATS/FLAPS levers are not in the UP position
What is normal gear retraction/extension time?
10 seconds for retraction
15 seconds for extension
How is the main gear locked in the down position?
By the hydraulic downlock and springs on the overcenter lock links attached to the sidebrace.
How is the nose gear locked in the down position?
An internal lock ring within the drag brace
What powers the NWS system?
HYD 1 provides hydraulic power, and electrical power is supplied by the 28vdc essential services bus
When is NWS automatically engaged/disengaged?
NWS is automatically engaged during initial engine start and disengaged with weight off both main gear. NWS is reengaged on landing with weight on one main gear and momentary weight on the nose gear.
How is NWS manually disengaged and what indication do you get?
By momentarily pressing the paddle switch on the stick. NOSE WHL STR caution light comes on.
What happens if you press the paddle switch for more than four seconds?
NWS will enter a test routine and will not engage. Momentarily press the NWS button to end the test routine and engage NWS.
When should high gain NWS be used and how is it activated?
For taxi purposes below 10 KTS.
Pressing and holding the NWS button activates high gain NWS. NWS HI advisory light illuminates.
How far does full rudder pedal deflection turn the nose wheel in low and high gain modes?
Low - 12 degrees
Mid - 20 degrees (LBAR extended)
High - 65 degrees
How does the LAUNCH BAR switch effect NWS?
Setting the LAUNCH BAR switch to extend disengages NWS. Pressing and holding NWS will reengage it in mid gain
***What triggers the NWS caution?
A system failure has been detected or the system has been paddled off
What does NWS AUG system do?
Adds a directional damping signal to make yaw rate changes more proportional to pilot inputs
How is the NWS AUG system reset?
By momentarily pressing the NWS button
***Will NWS be available following an Emergency Gear extension?
NWS is not available when the Emergency Gear extension handle is not stowed. (If HYD 1 pressure is available, you can stow the handle following an emergency gear extension in order to restore NWS)
***How is the launch bar raised and lowered?
The launch bar is mechanically raised by a spring, hydraulically lowered
***When does the SKID advisory light illuminate?
With both anti-skid switches ON and gear down
***How is the hook extended, held down, and retracted?
The hook is extended by gravity, assisted/held down by the snubber, and retracted hydraulically
***What are five times you should turn off the Anti-skid?
- After shutdown, prior to setting the parking brake,
- HYD 1 loss
- Carrier operations
- SKID caution light
- Blown tire or brake failure
