NATOPS -Egress Flashcards
How can you tell if the canopy is unlocked?
An UNLOCKED label in each cockpit (obscured by the safety catch when the canopy is locked) will be visible. Also, canopy light will be illuminated
How is the Mild Detonation Cord (MDC) activated?
Automatically by seat ejection or manually by pulling the MDC firing handle in either cockpit
How far does the MDC firing handle travel and when does it initiate firing?
The MDC travels about four inches. Only the last inch initiates firing
***When does the CANOPY caution light, master alert light and caution tone come on?
The canopy caution light is illuminated anytime the canopy is unlocked. The master alert and tone only come on when the throttle is advanced above 95% N2 with the canopy unlocked.
What type of ejection seat is the T-45C equipped with?
Martin Bake Navy Aircrew Common Ejection Seat (NACES)
How is each seat ejected from the aircraft?
Gas pressure developed in the telescoping catapult when the cartridges are fired
When does the rocket motor fired and what is its purpose?
The rocket motor is fired at the end of the catapult stroke to sustain thrust and to propel the seat to a sufficient altitude for parachute deployment
What controls the timing of events after rocket motor initiation?
Electronic Sequencer
***How many modes of operation are there and how are they determined?
5 modes, determined by electronic sequencer based on airspeed and altitude upon ejection
Which seat is ejected first if the command ejection selector is set to BOTH?
The aft seat is fired 0.5 seconds before the front seat
What is the function of the leg restraint system and where are the blue nylon leg restraint lines attached?
The leg restraint systems function is to restrain the legs against the seat during ejection. The leg restraint lines are attached to taper plugs in the seat and after passing through the snubber, to the cockpit floor
How are the emergency oxygen and emergency locator beacon activated?
Lanyards attached to the cockpit floor remove pins to activate the oxygen and beacon
How far does the ejection handle travel and how much force is required to initiate ejection?
The handle travels 3 inches and only the last inch initiates the ejection sequence. 30-60 lbs is required to initiate ejection
Describe the ejection sequence (low/medium altitude)
- After pulling the ejection handle, IFF is actuated, inertial reel positions occupant, canopy fractures
- Catapult fires, propelling seat up guide rail. Occupants legs are restrained. Emergency oxygen and radio beacon are actuated. Rocket fires near the end of the catapult stroke. Drogue catapult fires, deploying drogue
- Drogue releases from seat. Parachute rocket fires to deploy main parachute. Harness and leg restraint lines are released
- Parachute opening separates the pilot from the seat
What are the three ways the parachute is deployed?
(1) electrically by the sequencer at 18,000 feet, mechanically by the barostatic release unit between 14,000 and 16,000 feet, or mechanically by a four second delay cartridge when the manual override handle is pulled
