What was NATO’s purpose when it was first formed?
A
A way to have collective security against the Soviet Union.

What did the Soviet Union try and do with NATO?
A
To join it. But they were rejected, most likely as a way of aggravating them and provoking them into making a rash move first.

How did the Soviets see NATO?
A
They saw it as a direct threat to soviet expansion, and in retaliation does the Warsaw pact.

what does the creation of NATO do to America?
A
It commits them long term to the defence of Europe.
