Russian Civil War
The Whites (supported by the UK, France, USA and Japan) and the Bolsheviks fought for control of the Russian Empire. The Whites lost and so the USSR was born.

The Polish-Russian War
Poland invaded the now USSR and so the USSR took it back, edging them closer to the West and progressing the Cold War.

The Nazi-Soviet Pact
This split Germany into two half for the USSR and the other Nazi Germany. This increased their territory quite a bit, edging them closer to the Capitalist West.
