Nasal mite and respiratory parasites Flashcards
Pneumonyssoides caninum
Rare, small, white, life cycle entirely within host, direct contact spreads mites. Irritation of the mucous membranes, sneezing, rhinitis
How do you treat pneumonyssoides caninum?
None approved- use imdacloprid/moxidectin, selamectin, milbemycin oxime
What is the parasite associated with nasal capillariasis?
Eucoleus boehmi
Eucoleus boehmi
White, thin worms in mucosal epithelium of nasal turbinates, frontal and paranasal sinuses, can have earthworms as IH, can see sneezing and discharge
What is the treatment for Eucoleus boehmi?
None approved, use ivermectin or fenbendazole
Eucoleus aerophilus
in trachea, bronchi, and bronchioles, slender white worms, direct life cycle but can use earthworms as PH, infective larvated eggs swallowed–>lungs–>mature in bronchioles and alveoli–>eggs coughed up and swallowed; severe bronchopneumonia and secondary pneumonia can occur, find eggs in feces
How do you treat Eucoleus aerophilus?
None approved, use fenbendazole or ivermectin
Filaroides osleri
Junction of trachea and primary bronchi–>deposit thin shelled eggs–>L1 hatch and are carried to the trachea and swallowed–>passed in feces or vomit and are immediately infective–>lungs where develop to adults in nodules. Can infect pups through cleaning, or by autoinfection. most severe in puppies. Sedimentation best to get larvae
What is the treatment for F. osleri?
Three criteria for successful chemotherapy:
1) disappearance of signs 2) resolution of nodules 3) disappearance of larvae from feces
Aelurostrongylus abstrusus
cats-bronchioles and alveolar ducts, male bursa with short indistinct lobes. Eggs in b/ad–>larvae hatch and are moved up by mucociliary action, passed in feces, goes into snail or slug, cat eats IH, PPP 5-6 weeks. Produce inflammatory exudates, atalectasis, granulomatous pneumonia. Use Baermann procedure~
Crenosoma vulpis
dogs-bronchi and bronchioles, slender and tapered at both ends, cuticle like folds. Use Baermann procedure for larvae recovery
How do you treat A. a?
None approved, use imidacloprid/moxidectin
Paragonimus kelicotti
Thick oval fluke with spiny cuticle, eggs coughed up and swallowed–>feces–>miracidium to snail–>cercariae leave and penetrate crawfish–>encyst as metacercariae–>excyst in DH–>penetrate abdominal cavity to lungs. Results in eosoniphilic granulomatous pneumonia LIKE H. americana. Signs are moist cough, chronic gagging, coughing up blood
How do you treat P. kellicotti?
None approved, use fenben or praziquaantel (like al flukes)
Is P. kellicotti zoonotic?
Yes but only if eat undercooked crayfish
