Adenosine N. Ah DEN oh Sine
Basically, as you go through a number of waking hours, adenosine levels build up in your blood. When the brain detects too high a level in your blood, it starts making you sleepy. Once you are asleep, it tends to keep you asleep until your adenosine levels are safe.

Like Marijuana, it increases adenosine levels in the basal forebrain and makes you drowsy.
What does caffiene do? Caffeine stimulates you with new energy by blocking your adenosine receptors, and keeps you from getting drowsy.
Adenosine in the brain. In the brain adenosine is an inhibitory neurotransmitter and can act as a central nervous system depressant. It promotes sleep and suppresses arousal. When awake the levels of adenosine in the brain rise each hour.
