Mutualism Flashcards
Types of mutualists:
Generalists
Specialists
Species that interact with many other species (Bees and flowers)
Species that interact with one or few other species
Oblique mutualists
Two species that provide fitness benefits to each other and require each other to persist
Facultative mutualists
Yep species that’s provide fitness benefits to each other but whose interaction is not critical to the persistence of either species
Mycorrhizal fungi
Fungi that surround plant roots and help plants obtain water and minerals.
Endo mycorrhizal fungi
Most common type
Hyphae threads that extend far out into the soil and penetrate root cells between the cell wall and the cell membrane.
Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi: infect a tremendous number of plants, including grasses, apples, and coffee trees.
Ectomycorrhizal fungi
Hyphae that surround the roots of plants and enter between root cell walls, but rarely penetrate between the cell wall and the cell membrane.
Micro biome
The community of microorganisms that live in regions of a plants or animals body-including bacteria, viruses, fungi and protists
Endophytic fungi
Fungi that live inside Plants tissues
-produce chemicals that repel insect herbivores and provide drought resistance by increasing the concentration of minerals in plant tissues.
Pollination is an example of ….
Mutualism!!!
Food for insect/animal
Seed dispersal for plant
