Must Understand Flashcards
Airbus Golden Rules
- Fly Navigate Communicate
- USE appropriate automation at all times
- UNDERSTAND the FMA at all times
- TAKE ACTION if things don’t go as expected
What does land ASAP RED mean?
Land as soon as possible, at the nearest airport at which a SAFE LANDING can be made.
-time critical situation
What does land ASAP AMBER mean?
Consider landing at the nearest SUITABLE airport
What is a suitable aerodrome?
An Adequate Aerodrome with good weather
FOPPM6.3.15
Suitable runway definition:
Fit for purpose of landing in the prevailing environmental conditions and aircraft config
Definition of an Adequate aerodrome?
- Meets physical Characteristics
- LDA not less than LDR
- Surface and Strength ok, wont damage a/c or airport
- Enough room for parking clear of movement areas
- lighting
- Provide facilities and services for aircraft:
- Met forecasts
- At least 1 suitable instrument approach
Aircraft must be planned within 60mins OEI (430nm ISA still air)
-
Scenario: If approaching KG from PH and go into EMER ELEC CONFIG (LAND ASAP RED) where will you land? Wx: KG -CAVOK PH -TEMP0 TS
LAND ASAP RED -nearest airport where safe landing can be made.
EMER ELEC -LDR:
2561m (30deg,SL,1010,nil wind)
Must land at Perth.
A safe landing cannot be made at KG
How do you intercept glideslope from above?
Flap 2, Gear down
Cleared for approach, APPR pb, AP 1+2,
When LOC or LOC*:
FCU ALT wind above
VS 1500fpm, PULL
(speedbrake if required)
If in ALT* FL390 and speed reducing towards Apha Prot, what should you do?
PUSH TO LEVEL OFF
Nose will come down. Once speed recovered continue climb
Cruising at FL390 and speed starts to wash off due wind change or something. You try to request lower level but ATC very slow to come back to you. What do you do?
Go to THRUST MCT
NB. This will disengage A/THR
What is the only time the aircraft stays in alternate law after landing gear down for landing?
After Abnormal Attitude Law
Why is a long runway required in ELEC EMER config?
NO ANTISKID!
When in alternate law, when will the aircraft automatically go into Direct law?
Landing Gear down,
AND
AP OFF
How do you know you’re in Direct Law?
amber crosses
Amber USE MAN PITCH TRIM
How do you manage an approach which will transition into Direct Law once the Gear is down (and AP off)?
Early stabilised to Flap3,
Intercept GS, then
Landing Gear at normal time
What are the features of Direct Law?
No automatic trim -manual trim only
Amber USE MAN PITCH TRIM
No protections operative
Alpha Floor is inoperative
Overspeed and stall warnings available as for alternate law
Is flap Full available for a Direct Law Landing?
No,
Config 3
Direct Law:
a) Roll Rate clean
b) Roll rate slats extended
a) 30 deg / sec
b) 25 deg / sec
To Limit roll rate in direct law….
only ailerons and spoilers 4 (3 if 4 is failed) and 5
When will the Landing Gear Not Down alert trigger?
- RA <750ft, and
Both Engines <75% N1, or
(97% OEI) - RA <750ft, and
Both Engines not at TO power, and
Flap 1,2,3,or Full - Both RA Failed, and
Flap 3 or Full
(EMER ELEC /RA 1+2 fail)
What is the only failure that goes from Normal Law to Direct Law with LG down, and Direct Law to Normal Law, LG UP?
Dual RA Failure
Features of Dual RA Failure?
- No Callouts
- APPR pb does not work
- Normal law to direct law with LG down and AP off
- Landing flap 3
- GPWS/TCAS/Reactive WS/Low energy n/a
-LG NOT DOWN if flap 3 selected before LG down
What sort of approach shall be flown?
Early stabilised
LOC FPA available, or raw data ILS
ILS approach mode cannot be engaged
What are VFE and VFE next based on?
The flap lever position
What is the overspeed warning and VLS based on?
The actual flap position
What is Alpha Lock?
Prevents slat retraction at high AoA or Low Spd when flap lever is moved to 0
Is Alpha lock a normal situation for take-off at heavy weights?
Yes
When is Alpha Lock Triggered?
Flap 0:
AoA > 8.5 deg, or Speed <148kt
When is the Alpha Lock inhibitr removed, allowing slats to retract?
When:
AoA <7.6 deg, and
Speed >154kts
How is alpha lock presented?
A-LOCK pulses green (cyan-YUD) on the flap position indicator
Max Taxi speed during a turn?
10kts
FCTM NP SOP TAXI
Max Taxi speed in straight line on taxiway or runway?
30kts
Spacing behind a turbo prop?
Moving 15m / Static 23m
Spacing behind a jet?
Moving 30m / static 46m
When is a manual start recommended?
M arginal External Airpressure
A bort
T ail >10kts
H ot /high alt / reduced EGT
When can you press the APPR pb on an ILS?
When:
- Cleared for approach
- Have LOC deviation
- On an intercept track
What is the precaution with pressing the APPR pb when cleared Direct TO Haigh or Timmy for an ILS?
Delay pushing APPR pb otherwise the aircraft will turn straight away to intercept the LOC
What does SAFE stand for during the Support Process?
S tate the exceedance
“Glideslope” “600’ low and deviating”
Announce a solution
“decrease RoD or we’ll be too low”
F ix the Problem
“Captain, you must listen, we are too low, Go Around”
“[Title] you must listen, [action to take]”
E mergency Statement, take control of aircraft
“Approach unstable, I have Control, Go Around, flaps”
Min portable oxy (first aid) calc?
Must have sufficient to supply 1% of pax for entire planned duration of flight.
Number of bottles x
310 litres
divided by 3 (litres/min)
x 1% of pax
RVSM: CASA
a) Must not overshoot/undershoot by?

What happens with selection of Flap 1?
- Slat 1 extends
- VLS decrease (as does Alpha Prot)
- Approach Idle thrust
