EP's Flashcards
The a320 is equipped with what type of fire extinguishers?
1.0kg Halon
Duration 7-9 sec
Range 3m
Where are the portable fire extinguishers located?
- 1 x Flight Deck
- 2 x FWD Left Locker 1ABC
- 1 x MID Right Locker 11DEF
- 1 x REAR GALLEY LHS
- 1(2 YUD) x REAR GALLEY RHS
Halon Fire extinguishers may be used on what types of fires?
All classes of fire
The contents of Halon fire extinguishers are…….
Likely to cause
breathing difficulties, and/or
Skin damage if discharged and inhaled.
A PBE should be used when fighting fires.
What are the precautions to be followed when using a Halon Fire extinguisher?
- High concentrations of the extinguishing agent can result in dizziness, impaired concentration and coordination.
- Avoid inhaling the extinguishing agent and
- Use a PBE where possible
- Avoid getting too close to flammable liquid fires to reduce risk of scattering.
- Do not allow any part of the fire extinguisher to make contact with electrical wires
What is the pre-flight serviceability check of the 1.0kg Halon fire extinguisher in the cockpit?
Secure in brackets
Ensure wire seal is in place
Check pressure guage in green

What are the precautions to be followed when using a crash axe?
Never use blade to cut through panels inflight as circuitry and hydraulic lines could be severed.
Prising with the spike end must be done gently and cautiously.
Excluding the engines, fixed fire extinguishers in the airbus A320 include?
Cargo compartment fire extinguishers, and
Toilet waste bin extinguishers
When fighting a lithium battery fire, your initial actions should include:
- Remove external power from device
- Conduct basic fire drill
- Don PBE
- Fight fire with Halon
- Douse device with water or nonflammable liquid
- Monitor for reignition
DO NOT MOVE DEVICE (unless in flight deck)
As altitude increases, the amount of oxygen available for respiration decreases.
What effect does this have on your respiration?
Respiration rate (and heart rate) INCREASES as your body attempts to compensate for lack of oxygen in the air.
What is Hypoxia?
A lack of useable oxygen available to the body’s cells
Time of useful conciousness can be described as….?
The time from the exposure to an oxygen poor environment until deterioration of an individuals effective performance
Without supplemental oxygen, the time of useful conciousness at flight level 400 is….?
18 secs
Without supplemental oxygen, the time of useful conciousness at flight level 350 is….?
30sec
Without supplemental oxygen, the time of useful conciousness at flight level 300 is….?
45sec
Without supplemental oxygen, the time of useful conciousness at flight level 280 is….?
1min
Without supplemental oxygen, the time of useful conciousness at flight level 250 is….?
2min
Without supplemental oxygen, the time of useful conciousness at flight level 220 is….?
5min
As the altitude the human body is exposed to increases, gasses in the body will?
Expand, create bubbles and be hazardous to your health
Gas expansion that leads to nitrogen bubble formation in the body is known as what?
Cassion disease or decompression sickness
Symptoms of nitrogen bubble formation in the body include?
Joint pain
Itchy skin
Headaches
Dizziness
Shortness of breath
Paralysis
Death
Physiological effects of SEVERE oxygen deprivation include?
Blue tinge to lips and fingers
Loss of consciousness
Death
Physiological effects of MILD oxygen deprivation include?
Fatigue
Listlessness and vague distress
Lack of concentration
During a flight a Flight Crew member starts feeling unwell. They then collapse over the controls and are showing no signs of regaining consciousness.
What are your immediate actions?
Ensure safe flight condition by:
Taking Over control
Check position of essential controls and switches, and
Check Autopilot engaged
Advise ATC of any holding time required / Request ambulance -PAN if crew less than minimum
Request assistance from SCCM
Prepare for approach and landing -normal checklists and procedures
