musculoskeletal pain
esophagitis and GI discomfort
jaw pain (zoledronate)
atrial fibrillation (zoledronate)
Bisphosphonates Administration
administer medication in the morning on an empty stomach
instruct client to consume at least 8 oz of water with administration
remain upright for 30 minutes after administration
consume adequate amounts of vitamin D

DMARDs Indications
slow joint degeneration and progression of rheumatoid arthritis
DMARDs Precautions
methotrexate contraindicated in pregnancy, kidney or liver failure, psoriasis, alcohol use disorder, hematologic dyscrasias
DMARDs Complications
Methotrexate: increased risk of infection, bone marrow suppression, GI ulceration
Hydroxychloroquine: retinal damage
DMARDs Administration
monitor for signs of infection
monitor liver function tests
use reliable contraception
initial effects may take 3-6 weeks, full effects may take several months
administer with food
hydroxychloroquine: retinal exam every 6 months

Allopurinol

Antigouts Precautions
use caution in renal, cardiac, gastrointestinal dysfunction
should not be combined with theophyline
Antigouts Complications
GI distress
Rash and fever (discontinue immediately)
decreases the metabolism of warfarin
Antigouts Administration
instruct client to avoid foods high in purines to reduce uric acid
monitor CBC and uric acid levels
instruct clients to avoid aspirin
administer with meals
