Long bones
Bones longer than they are wide; found in limbs
Tubular

Cuboidal bones
Short bones
Flat bones
Bones consisting of a layer of spongey bone between two thin layers of compact bone; cross-section is flat; have marrow but no marrow cavity; ex. Skull, ribs
Irregular bones
Bones that don’t fit in other categories; ex. Mandible, zygoma, vertebrae
Closed fracture
Fracture that does not involve breaking of the skin
Compound fracture
Fracture that projects through the skin with possibility of infection
Comminuted fracture
Fracture with more than two separate bone components/ fragments
Transverse fracture
Fracture that breaks the bone shaft across the longitudinal axis
Greenstick fracture
Fracture where only one side of the of the shaft is broken and the other is bent; common in children
Spiral fracture
Fracture spread along the length of the bone; produced by twisting stress
Colles’ fracture
Fracture of the wrist that affects the distal radial bone
Compression fracture
Vertebral collapse due to trauma, tumor or osteoporosis
Epiphyseal fracture
Fracture that occurs where the bone matrix is calcifying and chondrocytes are dying; usually seen in children
Epiphyseal fracture
Fracture that occurs where the bone matrix is calcifying and chondrocytes are dying; usually seen in children
Ankylosis
Stiffening of a joint
