Musculoskeletal Review Flashcards
Five functions of bones
- Support the body
- Produce blood cells
- Store fat and minerals
- Protect organs (soft tissues)
- Create motion
Stages of bone repair
- Bleeding at injury site, clotting, granulation
- Proliferation of cells, callus formation at site of injury
- Osteoblast or cartilage formation
- Bone calcifies (harden)
- Remodeling to appropriate shape
Function of cartilage
- Protect bone
- Cushions (reduces stress on bones)
- Decreases friction between bones
Function of muscle
- Provides structure
- Movement
- Produce heat
S/S of muscle disease
Weakness, atrophy
S/S of bone and joint disease
Pain, swelling, decreased mobility, deformity
Spondylitis
Inflammation, pain, stiffness of spinal joints. Joints can fuse together, resemble bamboo; “Bamboo Spine”
Osteoporosis
Abnormal loss of bone mass; bones have porous, swiss cheese appearance
Osteomyelitis
Inflammation of the bone marrow, usually affects long bones of extremities.
Osteomalacia
Abnormal softening of bones (called rickets in children); Caused by Vitamin D deficiency
Rheumatoid Arthritis
A chronic and systemic inflammation disease that primarily attacks joins and surrounding tissues
Gout
Disease associated with metabolic alteration or break down of a specific protein in food causing deposition of uric acid crystals
Gower’s sign is typical of __________
Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy
Classification of fractures
- Penetration of skin
- Condition of bone
- Number of fragments or position of fragments
- Position of fracture line as compared to bone position
- Location
Compound fracture
Penetration of skin
Penetrates skin
Closed fracture
Penetration of skin
Does not penetrate skin
Complete fracture
Condition of bone fracture
Extends through bone and divides bone into two pieces
Incomplete fracture
Condition of bone fracture
Fracture does not extend through the bone
Displaced fracture
Number or position of fragments
Fragments are out of position
Nondisplaced fracture
Number or position of fragments
Fragments remain in position
Comminuted fracture
Number or position of fragments
Crushed, fragmented, splintered
