Integumentary System Review Flashcards
Structures of the dermis
Sweat glands, sebaceous glands, hair follicles, nerve endings, connective tissue
Structures found in subcutaneous layer of skin
Fat cells, blood vessels, hair root
Pruritis
Itching
Erythema
Redness
Boil
Infection of an individual hair follicle, abscess
Carbuncle
Infection of multiple hair follicles, abscess
Cellulitis (which skin layers involved)
Diffuse inflammation of dermal and subcutaneous tissue caused by infection
MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus)
Causes cellulitis; bacteria resistant to many antibiotics which can present skin lesions
Acne
Inflammation of sebaceous glands and hair follicles
Eczema
Inflammation of skin with non-infectious skin lesions
Hemangioma
Congenital condition formed by small blood vessels that form reddish or purple birthmarks
Hirsutism
Excessive hair growth in women
Approximation (wound edges)
Primary intention - edges can be brought together and heal wounds using stitches, sutures, band-aids
Granulation tissue
Healing tissue, red and grainy texture, good vascular supply and new tissue
Clean technique
Using unsterile gloves, gowns, masks; cleaning solutions that are not sterile and using towels that are not sterile; using liners that are not sterile
Asceptic
Maintain sterile field
Verrucae
Warts
Pediculosis
Lice
Heat Exhaustion
Perspiration - Y
Skin appearance/feel - Skin is cool and moist, profuse perspiration
Sx - Weakness, nausea, muscle cramp
Body Temp - Normal body temp
Heat Stroke
Perspiration - N
Skin appearance/feel - Skin is red, hot and dry; no perspiration
Body Temp - Rises to 105˚
Hypothermia
Perspiration - N
Skin appearance/feel - Skin can appear cyanotic (blue)
Sx - Shivering, confusion, weak pulse
Body Temp - Falls below 95˚
1st Degree Burn
Skin appearance - Redness, minimal edema Skin layer - Epidermis Sx - No scarring Pain Level - Minimal Rate of healing - Resolves within few days Another term - Superficial
2nd Degree Burn
Skin appearance - Blanching with pressure, fast return of pink coloration
Skin layer - Destroys epidermis, damage to dermal layers
Sx - Blister formation, Minimal scarring
Pain Level - 2˚ damage to nerve endings
Rate of healing - Heals within 10 days
Another term - Superficial Partial-Thickness
3rd Degree Burn
Skin appearance - Red or white, blanching with pressure with low capillary refill, skin may appear charred, translucent white
Skin layer - Destroys epidermis, damage to deeper dermal layers, damage of hair follicles, sweat glands
Sx - Healed skin dry and flaky
Pain Level - Edema, 2˚ damage to blood vessels causes leakage
Rate of healing - Resolves within 3-5 weeks
Another term - Deep Partial-Thickness
