- Requires iodine
- Releases T4 to regulate body heat, stimulates GI system
Characteristics of Grave’s Disease
Protruding eyes, affects young women; hyperthyroidism, autoimmune
Characteristics of Goiter
Enlarged thyroid, decreased amount of T4
Characteristics of hypothyroidism
Lack of energy, sensitive to cold, slow metabolism
What is regulated by the parathyroid? Why is substance important?
Calcium - important for clotting and muscle contraction
Conn’s Syndrome
Overproduction of aldosterone; important in maintaining blood volume pressure and electrocyte balance - HTN, low K+, increased blood pH
Cushing’s Syndrome
Overproduction of cortisol; Moon face, humped back, rotund stomach, fatigue, weakness
Addison’s Disease
Hypoadrenalism - undersecretion of sex hormones
