Musculo Skeletal System Flashcards
What is the musculo skeletal system
Includes all the bones in the body. Attached to the skeleton is the muscular system
Why is the musculo skeletal system important in sport
Keep us stable
Posture
Protection
Functions of the skeleton for sport
Protection Muscle attachment Joints for movement Blood cell production Storing minerals
How does protection help in sport
Skull protects the brain
Spine protects the spinal cord
Ribs protect the heart and organs
Whats the benefit of muscle attachment in sport
The muscles you use in sport need strong points to attach to. Bones provide that framework. The muscles are attached by tendons and the bones act as anchors that muscles can pull on as they move
Why are joints important in sport
Look at a skeleton and you can see points where bones come together to form joints.joints let the body make a variety of movements
Why is calcium and phosphorus important for sportsmen
The bones act as a store for calcium and phosphorus, two minerals that are vital for developing.
Phosphorus can help to reduce muscle pain after a hard work out
Why are red and white blood cell production important in sport
Some bones have hollow centres that hold bone marrow. Bone marrow makes most of the cells of the blood: red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. White stop infection, red gives us oxygen
