MUSCULAR SYSTEM - Skeletal Muscle Histology Flashcards
What are skeletal muscles?
Voluntary, striated muscles that shorten and pull on bones.
What is the neuromuscular junction?
The point of contact between a nerve and a muscle.
What is a myofiber?
A muscle “cell” with multiple peripheral nuclei.
What are myofilaments?
Contractile proteins actin and myosin.
What is a sarcomere?
The functional unit of muscle contraction from one Z-disc to another.
What is the sarcolemma?
The cell membrane of myofibers.
What are T-tubules?
Extensions of the sarcolemma that penetrate muscle fibers.
What is the sarcoplasmic reticulum?
The smooth endoplasmic reticulum of muscle cells that stores calcium.
What is a muscle triad?
One T-tubule and two terminal cisterns.
