Compresses cheeks inward; O: outer surfaces of maxilla and mandible, I: orbicularis oris; Facial nerve
Zygomaticus Muscle
Raises corner of mouth, “smiling”; O: zygomatic bone, I: skin and muscles around mouth; Facial nerve
Masseter Muscle
Closes jaw; O: zygomatic arch, I: mandible; Trigeminal nerve (Cranial V)
Temporalis Muscle
Closes jaw; O: temporal bone, I: mandibular coronoid process; Trigeminal nerve
Sternocleidomastoid Muscle
Flexes neck and rotates head; O: sternum and clavicle, I: mastoid process of temporal bone; Accessory nerve (Cranial XI) and branches of cervical spinal nerves (C2/C3)
Trapezius Muscle
Extends neck and adducts scapula; O: occipital bone and all cervical and thoracic vertebrae, I: spine of scapula and clavicle; Accessory nerve (Cranial nerve XI, C2/C3)
External Intercostal Muscle
Pulls ribs up and out; O: superior rib, I: inferior rib; Intercostal nerves
Internal Intercostal Muscle
Pulls ribs down and in; O: inferior rib, I: superior rib; Intercostal nerves
Diaphragm Muscle
Inspiration, flattens increasing vertical dimensions of thorax; O: inferior internal surface of rib cage and sternum, I: central tendon of diaphragm; Intercostal nerves
External Oblique Muscle
Tenses abdominal wall and lateral rotation; O: lower 8 ribs, I: iliac crest; Intercostal nerves (T7-T12)
Internal Oblique Muscle
Tenses abdominal wall and lateral rotation; O: iliac crest, I: lower 3 ribs; Intercostal nerves (T7-T12, L1)
Transversus Abdominis Muscle
Tenses abdominal wall; O: lower 6 ribs, I: crest of pubis; Intercostal nerves (T7-T12, L1)
Rectus Abdominis Muscle
Flexes vertebral column; O: crest of pubis, pubic symphysis, I: xiphoid process of sternum, 5th - 7th costal cartilages; Intercostal nerves (T6 or T7-T12)
Rhomboideus Major Muscle
Raises and adducts scapula; O: spines of upper thoracic vertebrae. I: medial border of scapula; Dorsal scapular nerve (C4/C5)
Infraspinatus Muscle
Rotates arm laterally; O: posterior surface of scapula, I: greater tubercle of humerus; Suprascapular nerve
Serratus Anterior Muscle
Pulls scapula downward and forward; O: upper 9 ribs, I: vertebral border of scapula; Long thoracic nerve (C5-C7)
Deltoid Muscle
Abducts arm; O: acromion process, spine of scapula, clavicle, I: deltoid tuberosity of humerus; Axillary nerve (C5/C6)
Pectoralis Major Muscle
Flexes and adducts arm; O: clavicle, sternum, 2nd to 6th costal cartilages, I: intertubular groove of humerus; Lateral/medial pectoral nerves (C5-C8/T1)
