Muscles & the Sliding Filament Theory Flashcards
Cardiac Muscle
- Strongest
- Used the most
- Makes heart beat
Location: the walls of the heart
Smooth muscle
Location: lining of many organs (eg. stomach, esophagus, uterus, blood vessels)
- Type of Contraction: involuntary - can sustain prolonged contractions
Skeletal Muscle
Location: attached to the bones of skeleton by tendons [bands of connective tissue connecting muscles to bones]
Type of Contraction: voluntary - controlled consciously.
Muscle Contractions
When muscles contract they shorten.
Muscles can ONLY pull (They cannot push!)
Muscles that permit movement are found in pairs, because as a muscle is in the relaxed state it needs an opposite muscle to stretch it.
Antagonist Muscle:
pairs of muscles that work against each other to make a joint move. As one contracts, the other relaxes. (Eg. Biceps & Triceps)
Muscle Contractions
Biceps muscle contracting
Triceps muscle relaxed
