Ecosystems in the Biosphere Flashcards
UNIT B
Habitat
place/environment where living things normally live and grow. It is made up of biotic and abiotic components
Ecological Niche
an organism’s role in an ecosystem, consisting of its place in the food web, its habitat, its breeding area, and the time of day at which it is most active. Organisms can exist in different niches to decrease competition
Abiotic Factors
soil, relative humidity, moisture, ambient temperature, sunlight, minerals, oxygen, pH, etc.
Biotic Factors
competition, food availability, predation, and disease/parasites
Biome
a large geographic region defined by climate (temperature & precipitation) containing characteristic organisms.
Abiotic Factors Affecting Terrestrial Ecosystems:
Temperature
Available Water
Sunlight
Soil
Abiotic Factors Affecting Aquatic Ecosystems:
Temperature & Sunlight
Chemical Environment
Seasonal Variation
Water Pressure
Invasive Species
A introduced species, has no natural predators or diseases to limit their populations. Can have a serious impact on the native ecosystem, as they may have a niche similar to the niche of a native species and may outcompete the native species for resources.
Biosphere
a narrow zone around the earth that can support life. All living things on earth are found in this area.
Atmosphere
Hydrosphere
Lithosphere
