Quadriceps Femoris
Origin - Anterior surface of femur and anterior side of the medial and lateral intermuscular septa
Insertion - Tibial tuberosity via patellar ligament
Action - Extends the knee; rectus femoris flexes the thigh
Innervation Femoral nerve
Artery - Lateral circumflex femoral a., deep femoral a.
Rectus Femoris
Origin - Straight head: anterior inferior iliac spine (AIIS)
Reflected head: above the superior rim of the acetabulum
Insertion - Patella and tibial tuberosity via patellar ligament
Action- Extends the leg; flexes the thigh
Innervation - Femoral nerve
Artery - Lateral circumflex femoral a.
Sartorius
Origin - ASIS
Insertion - Medial surface of the tibia (pes anserinus)
Action - Flexes, abducts and laterally rotates the thigh; flexes leg
Innervation - Femoral nerve
Artery - Lateral circumflex femoral a., saphenous a.
Vastus lntermedius
Origin - Anterior & lateral surface of femur
Insertion - Patella
Action - Extends leg
Innervation- Femoral nerve
Artery - Lateral circumflex femoral a.
Vastus Lateralis
Origin - Lateral intermuscular septum, lateral lip of linea aspera and the gluteal
tuberosity
Insertion - Patella and medial patellar retinaculum
Action - Extends leg
Innervation - Femoral nerve
Artery- Lateral circumflex femoral a., perforating branches of deep femoral a.
Vastus Medialis
Origin - Medial intermuscular septum, medial lip of linea aspera
Insertion - Patella and medial patellar retinaculum
Action - Extends leg
Innervation - Femoral nerve
Artery - Lateral circumflex femoral a.
Adductor Brevis
Origin - Inferior pubic ramus
Insertion - Pectineal line and linea aspera (deep to pectineus and adductor longus
mm.)
Action - Adducts, flexes and medially rotates the femur
Innervation - Anterior division of obturator nerve
Artery - Obturator a., deep femoral a.
Adductor Longus
Origin - Medial portion of the superior pubic ramus
Insertion - Linea aspera of the femur
Action - Adducts, flexes and medially rotates the femur
Innervation - Anterior division of obturator nerve
Artery - Obturator a., deep femoral a.
Adductor Magnus
Origin - lschiopubic ramus and ischial tuberosity
Insertion -Linea aspera of the femur; the ischiocondylar part inserts on the adductor tubercle of the femur
Action - Adducts, flexes and medially rotates the femur; extends the femur
(ischiocondylar part)
Innervation - Posterior division of obturator nerve; tibial nerve (ischiocondylar part)
Artery - Obturator a., deep femoral a. , medial femoral circumflex a.
Gracilis
Origin - Pubic symphysis and inferior pubic ramus
Insertion - Medial surface of the tibia (pes anserinus)
Action - Adducts the thigh, flexes and medially rotates the femur, flexes the leg
Innervation - Anterior division of obturator nerve
Artery - Obturator a.
Pectineus
Origin - Pecten pubis
Insertion - Pectineal line of the femur
Action - Adducts, flexes and medially rotates the femur
Innervation - Femoral nerve and possibly the anterior division of the obturator nerve
Artery - Medial femoral circumflex a.
Biceps Femoris
Origin - Long head: ischial tuberosity
Short head: lateral lip of linea aspera
Insertion - Head of fibula and lateral condyle of tibia
Action - Extends thigh; flexes leg
Innervation - Long head: tibial nerve
Short head: common fibular nerve
Artery - Perforating branches of deep femoral a.
Semimembranosus
Origin - Upper, outer surface of ischial tuberosity
Insertion - Medial condyle of tibia
Action - Extends thigh; flexes leg
Innervation - Tibial nerve
Artery - Perforating branches of deep femoral a.
Semitendinosus
Origin - Lower, medial surface of ischial tuberosity (common tendon with biceps
femoris m.)
Insertion - Medial surface of tibia (pes anserinus)
Action - Extends thigh; flexes leg
Innervation -Tibial nerve
Artery - Perforating branches of deep femoral a.
