Muscles of the arm (UE) Flashcards
What muscles are contained in the anterior compartment of the arm?
Biceps brachii, coracobrachialis, brachialis
What muscle is contained in the posterior compartment of the arm?
Triceps
What is the attachment point for the long head of the biceps brachii?
supraglenoid tubercle of the scapula (at the top of the glenoid fossa)
What is the attachment point for the short head of the biceps brachii?
coracoid process of the scapula
What is the attachment point for the distal end of the biceps brachii?
lands on the radius
What is the innervation of the biceps brachii?
Musculocutaneous nerve (along with all other anterior compartment muscles)
What are the actions of the biceps brachii?
Flex the elbow and supinate the forearm (turning hand so palm is open and face-up)
What is the bicipital aponeurosis of the biceps brachii?
A landmark of connective tissue at the end of the biceps belly that lands on the forearm
(also a location to determine where the brachial artery is descending to the forearm/split into radial and ulnar arteries)
What is the transverse humeral ligament of the biceps brachii?
A landmark which keeps the long head of the biceps tendon in place (goes across the greater tuberosity to the lesser tuberosity)
-covers bicipital groove
What is bicipital tendonitis?
Inflammation that occurs in the long head of the biceps tendon under the transverse humeral ligament
*causes very distinct pain in that specific region
What is a proximal rupture of the biceps?
The long head of the biceps tendon ruptures
-the muscle belly usually held by this tendon will slump down and forms a ball/bump in the arm
*usually treated surgically
*if surgery is not an option, short head can somewhat compensate
What is a distal rupture of the biceps?
A tear of the biceps tendon that occurs in the distal attachment of the biceps brachii
Which muscles sit deep to the biceps brachii?
brachialis and coracobrachialis
What are the attachments of the coracobrachialis?
Attaches at the coracoid process of the scapula and anchors onto the mid portion of the humerus
What is the innervation of the coracobrachialis?
Musculocutaneous nerve (along with all other anterior compartment muscles)
