Muscle Metabolism Flashcards
Aerobic exercise
Absence of oxygen
Sliding filament theory
Theory that thin filaments slide past thick ones during muscle contractions, overlap increases. Sacromere shortens and z discs move closer together
Isotonic contraction
Muscle changes in length and moves the load
Isometric contraction
Muscle does not shorten, load is too great to overcome
Rigor Mortis
Cell membranes leak. Calcium is leaked out of SR into sarcoplasm. Myosin heads bind with actin. Cross bridges cannot be broken. Begins 3-4 hours after death, lasts 48-60 hours until enzymes digest bridges
Fast twitch fibers
Contract quickly. Does not depend on oxygen. Fatigue easily. Thick. White
Slow twitch fibers
Contract slowly. Depend on oxygen. Thin. Fatigue resistant. Red. High in myglobin
Resistance exercise
Type of exercise used to increase muscle mass. Lifting, isometric exercise
Cramp
Spasmodic muscle contraction without complete relaxation.
Muscular dystrophy
Group of inherited muscle destroying diseases. Muscle degenerates. Appears in childhood usually.
