Skeleton is initially made of cartilage, but bone replaces is it through ossification. Cartilage provides flexibility. No blood vessels or nerves

Axial skeleton
Trunk and head
Short bones
Cube shaped bones of the wrist (carpals) and ankle (tarsals)
Compact bone
Dense, smooth, solid outer layer of home
Fracture

Appendicular skeleton
Skeleton that includes legs and arms
Flat bones
Sternum, scapula, ribs and most skull bones
Spongy bone
Internal to compact bone. Contains open space filled with red or yellow marrow
Osteoporosis
Bone becomes fragile, spongy bone of spine is most vulnerable. Happens when bone is gotten rid of faster than it’s replaced
