Fibrous joints
Bones joined by fibrous tissue. No joint cavity.
Synovial joints
Articulating bones are separated by a fluid containing cavity
Cartilaginous joints
Bones are united by cartilage. Lack a joint cavity
Flexion
Bending movement that decreases the angle of the joint
Extension
Reverse of Flexion; joint angle is increased
Abduction
Movement away from midline
Adduction
Movement toward the middle
Hinge joint
Cylindrical part of one bone fits into a trough shapes surface on another. Elbow and ankle.
Pivot joint
Rounded end of one bone protrudes into a sleeve/ring composed of bone or ligament of another. Atlas and axis.
Ball and socket joint
Head of one bone articulates with a cup like wicket of another. Hip and shoulder.
Sprain
Ligaments are stretched or torn
Dislocation
bones are forced out of alignment
Arthritis
A group of more than 100 inflammatory diseases that damage joints
