Blood Flashcards
Plasma
90% water, 10% solutes
Contains proteins, organic nutrients, electrolytes, respiratory gases,
Erythrocytes
RBCs. Bi concave discs, anucleate, no organelles. Hemoglobin
Hemaglobin
Composed of protein globin made up of two beta and two alpha chains, each bound to a heme group. Heme bears an atom or iron
Platelets
Anucleated cells that are cytoplasmic fragments of extraordinarily large cells. essential for clotting
Leukocytes
WBCs. Only complete cells in blood. Less numerous than RBCs. Make up 1% of blood volume
Bilirubin
What heme is degraded to after the RBC is separated of heme and globin
Anemia
Decreased hemoglobin content
Sickle cell anemia
Results from a defective gene coding for abnormal Hemaglobin
Hemophilia
Hereditary bleeding disorders caused by lack of clotting factors
Leukemia
Cancer involving WBCs.
Thrombus
A clot that develops in an unbroken blood vessel
Hematopoiesis
Blood cell formation
Hematocrit
Percentage of RBC in total blood volume
ABO blood groups
Two antigens and two antibodies
Coagulation
Clumping of blood cells
