CNS Flashcards
Cerebrum
Both hemispheres of the brain
Diencephalon
consists of 3 structures. The thalamus, hypothalamus and epithalamus.
Cerebral cortex
Enables sensation, communication, memory, understanding, and voluntary movements.
Gray matter
Contains cell bodies and unmyelinated nerve fibers
Cerebellum
Provides timing and appropriate patterns of skeletal muscle contraction, controls balance and posture, subconscious.
Brain stem
Composed of the midbrain, pons, and medulla oblongota. Controls automatic behaviors necessary for survival
Brain Waves
Patterns of neuronal electrical activity recorded
White matter
Myelinated nerve fibers
Mid brain
Conduction pathway between higher and lower brain centers. Visual and auditory reflex center.
Frontal lobe
The front lobe of the brain
EEG
Electroencephalogram. Records electrical activity in the brain
Types of sleep
REM- rapid eye movement. After NREM. Dreams occur here
NREM- non rapid eye movement. Occurs in 4 stages during first 30-45 minutes of sleep. Most night mares occur here
Memory
Memory is the storage and retrieval of information
