Q

Classification of Muscles by Function and explain each

A

Agonist/prime mover: does the bulk of the work for a movement

antagonist: opposite of the motion

Synergist: helper to the movement

Q

what ways can you classify muscles?

A

-type of fiber (fast oxidative, slow oxidative etc)
-Size and Shape: strap, triangle etc
-function: agonist etc
-Action: direction of motion (flexor, extensor etc)

Q

Passive length-tension

A

anything the envelopes muscle fibers (the non contractile parts)
when contraction occurs these get tensed

Q

Active length- tension of sarcomere

A

generate the most force in mid-range (usually)
-the force goes down at the end ranges

Q

Active insufficiency

A

-has to be an attempt to make it work
-occurs at end ranges of motion
-muscles are too long or too short to generate a strong force or muscle contraction
-occurs in agonist when trying to use or work the muscle at either end range

Q

Passive insufficiency

A

-antagonist muscle is not long enough to allow full motion of joints
-muscle not working for contractive

Q

what do you look watch for to indicate muscle fatigue

decreased ROM
twitching
change in EMG

Q

What are possible factors that contribute to muscle fatigue

A

-decreased excitability at neuromuscular junction
-decreased excitability at sarcolemma
-change in excitation-contraction coupling b/c reduced sensitivity and availability of Ca++
-changes in contractile mechanics (slowing cross bridges)
-reduced energy source (metabolic)
-reduced blood flow/oxygen supply
