Multiple Sclerosis Flashcards
Describe Neuromyelitis optica
development of both optic neuritis and spinal cord demyelination at similar points in time.
Describe Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis
rapidly progressive diffuse demyelinating disease that usually develops 1-2 weeks after a viral infection. Demyelination occurs in a perivenous distribution.
Describe Acute necrotizing hemorrhagic encephalomyelitis (ANH)
follows an upper respiratory infection. This is a rapidly evolving, severe syndrome involving CNS demyelination. Lesions are similar to, but more severe than, ADEM.
Describe Central pontine myelinolysis
demyelination in the basis pontis and pontine tegmentum. The condition is classically associated with rapid correction of hyponatremia
Describe Guillain-Barre Syndrome
Most often is preceded by viral infection, immunization, gastroenteritis, allergic reactions. Symptoms include rapidly developing muscle weakness and paralysis beginning in the lower extremities and ascending upward.
CSF shows markedly increased protein without cell number increase.
