Q

What is meant if an animal is pure bred

A

It has a pure genotype with e.g. a pure white strain chicken has genotype C^WC^W

Q

How do you cross animals with multiple alleles that affect the same characteristic (co-dominance)

A

Normal 2 by 2 punnet square, but each gamete on the outside has 2 letters (e.g. C^B = 1 gamete and C^W = another)

Q

If you have genotype I^AI^B for your blood group, what antigens will your red blood cells have and what will your blood group phenotype be

Q

Why do we use I^A and I^B instead of A and B to represent blood types

A

If we used the letters A and B this would mean that they are different genes, not just different alleles on the same gene.

13
Q

What should you do when representing co - dominant alleles

A

use one symbol to represent the gene, and then different superscripts to code for it’s different alleles. E.g. C^B

Q

Why are some characteristics such as red-green colour blindness more common in men

A

Red-Green colour blindness and some other characteristics are sex linked (generally always with X chromosome) and since males only have 1 X chromosome, that chromosome must be deficient in the Red-Green colour blindness for them to avoid having it
