Mitosis Flashcards
How long does the interphase last
12-14 hours
What occurs during the interphase
Gap phase 1, DNA Synthesis Phase and Gap phase 2 (the stage in the cell cycle where the cell is not dividing)
What occurs during gap phase 1
Cell increases in size, produces RNA and proteins. Cell organelles replicate.
What occurs during Synthesis Phase
DNA replication - chromatids formed
What occurs during gap phase 2
checking for mutations to make sure cell is ready for mitosis. continues to grow and make proteins too, including microtubules for mitosis
What is cytokinesis
Division of the cytoplasm
what is mitosis
Process of nuclear division before the cell physically divides
What is the order of mitosis
Prophase, metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase (PMAT)
How long is the Prophase
1 to several hours
What occurs during the prophase
Chromatin shortens and thickens, each chromosome appears as 2 chromatids held by a centromere, 2 sets of centrioles move to opposite poles.
How long is the metaphase
5 to 15 minutes
What occurs during metaphase
centromeres attach to spindle fibres, so chromatids line up on the equatorial plane.
How long is anaphase
Shortest stage - a few minutes
What occurs during anaphase
microtubules shorten, therefore spindle fibres shorten, dragging chromatids apart (now just singular chromosomes again) and chromosomes are pulled to opposite ends of the cell
How long is Telophase
10 - 30 mins
