Prokaryotic Cells Flashcards
What two groups are prokaryotes divided into
Bacteria and Archaea
What do prokaryotes not have that eukaryotes do
Nucleus (DNA is suspended in cytoplasm), endoplasmic reticulum’s or golgi apparatus.
What do eukaryotes not have that prokaryotes do
Secreted Slime, Plasmids, flagella
give function of secreted slime
Protects bacteria from attacks by immune system.
give function of plasmids
Small loops of DNA. Contain genes for things like antibiotic resistance . Can be passed to other cells.
Which has membrane bound organelles - Prokaryotes or Eukaryotes
Eukaryotes
Eukaryotes ribosomes are 80s (there size) what are prokaryotes
70s
what happens in step 1 of binary fission
Circular DNA is replicated once and Plasmids replicate (plasmids can replicate many times)
What happens in step 2 of binary fission
Cell enlarges and DNA loops move to opposite poles of cell
What happens in step 3 of binary fission
Cytoplasm begins to divide, new cell walls form
What happens in step 4 of binary fission
Cytoplasm divides producing 2 new daughter cells, each with one copy of either DNA loop, but can have a variable number of plasmids each
