Eukaryotic Cells Flashcards
Give 4 examples of eukaryote cells
Animals, Plants, Fungi, Protists
give function of cell-surface membrane
Regulates movement of substances into and out of the cell
give function of nucleus
Controls cell’s activities by controlling the transcription of DNA. (DNA contains instructions to make proteins).
give function of mitochondria
responsible for aerobic respiration, producing ATP - a common energy source in the cell.
give function of chloroplast
Responsible for photosynthesis.
give function of golgi apparatus
Processes and packages new lipids and proteins. Also makes lysosomes.
give function of golgi vesicle
Stores lipids and proteins made by the Golgi apparatus and transports them out of the cell (via the cell membrane)
give function of lysosomes
Contains hydrolytic enzymes. These can be used to digest invading cells or to break down worn out components of the cell.
give function of ribosomes
Responsible for making proteins
give function of rough endoplasmic reticulum
Folds and processes proteins that have been made at the ribosomes
give function of smooth endoplasmic reticulum
Synthesises and processes lipids
give function of cell wall
Supports cells and prevents them from changing shape
give function of cell vacuole
Helps to maintain pressure inside the cell and keep the cell rigid. Isolates unwanted chemicals within the cell.
How are algal cells different to plant cells
Have cellulose walls and chloroplasts. However, the chloroplasts are a different shape and size to plant chloroplasts. E.g. One large chloroplast.
How are Fungal cells different to plant cells
Cell walls are made from chitin, not cellulose and they do not contain chloroplast.
