Types of microscopes Flashcards
what are the two types of electron microscope
Transmission electron microscope, Scanning electron microscope
Give an advantage of transmission electron microscopes
Give high resolution images, so shows small objects
Give two disadvantages of transmission electron microscopes
Can only be used on thin specimens. Can only be used on non-living specimens. (as it has to be in a vacuum)
Give two advantage of scanning electron microscopes
Can be used on thick specimens. Can be 3D
Give two disadvantages of scanning electron microscopes
Give lower resolution images than TEM’s. Can only be used on non-living specimens
How does a transmission electron microscope work
Uses electromagnets to focus a beam of electrons, which is then transmitted through the specimen.
How does a scanning electron microscope work
Scan a beam of electrons across the specimen. Knocking off electrons from the specimen, which are gathered in a cathode ray tube to form an image. (can be 3D)
