MTA Flashcards
what are the physical properties of MTA?
radio-opaque
sets in 3 hrs
hydrophillic
compressive strength increases over 3 weeks
pH of 12.2 - 12.5
produces coagulation ncrosis of tissuue it contacts resulting in a calcific response
What is the composition of MTA?
calcium silicate bisuth oxide calcium carbonate calcium sulphate calcciumm aluminate grey MTA containes ferrite which produces discolouration mix 3:1 to water
what are the idications of MTA?
1) vital pulp therapy
not a medicament as it sets
2) basicallly used to put a little seal after having stimulated regeneration (coronal seal in attempted “regenerative therapy”
3) apexification
4) root fractures - non healing (doesnt have ddetrimental on dentine that calcium hydroxide does with long term use)
5) perforations - lateral/furcations
6) apical seal following endodontic surgery
what are some disadvantages of MTA?
its a one shot deal, meaning once its there, reinstrumenting is pretty much impossible, surgery required
expensive
