MSK Session 11- Ageing In The MSK System And Pathology Of Joints Flashcards
What accelerates the loss of bone mineral density? (3)
- low reproductive hormones
- poor calcium and vitamin D
- immobilisation of the bone
What is osteoporosis?
Weakened bone due to decreased bone mineral density. This is due to bone resorption being greater than bone formation.
What is type 1 osteoporosis?
Post menopausal
What is type 2 osteoporosis?
Age related
What Is a drug that can be given to treat osteoporosis? What does it do?
Bisphosphonates
They reduce osteoclast function, leading to a decreased bone turnover and increased bone mineralisation.
What is osteoarthritis?
A disorder of synovial joints due to focal damage of articular cartilage.
What is a common sign of osteoarthritis?
Osteophytes- bony nodules caused by the remodelling of bone at joint margins.
What are the four radiological features of osteoarthritis?
Decreased joint space
Osteophytes
Sclerosis
Bone cysts
Define sarcopenia.
A loss of muscle mass
