M&R Session 11- Drugs And The ANS Flashcards
Which branch of the ANS causes bronchoconstriction in asthma?
Parasympathetic
Which parasympathetic and sympathetic receptors are found in the airways?
M3 and B2
What is the preferred treatment of asthma?
Beta 2 adrenoceptor agonists
What are the other drugs that can be used to treat asthma? (3)
Xanthippe drugs
Muscarinic receptor antagonists
Steroids
How do Xanthippe drugs treat asthma?
They inhibit phosphodiesterase which breaks down cAMP, therefore meaning that smooth muscle can relax.
What is the clinical definition of hypertension?
> 140/90 mmHg
What is the preferred treatment option for hypertension?
ACE inhibitors
Which adrenoceptors mediate vasoconstriction of vasculature?
Alpha 1
What are some of the signs and symptoms of thyrotoxicosis? (8)
Increased BMR Heat intolerance Warm, sweaty hands Sweating Weight loss Increase appetite Bulging eyes Tachycardia
What is the main ANS drug used to treat thyrotoxicosis?
Beta 2 antagonists
What is another drug that is commonly used to treat thyrotoxicosis? What does it do?
Carbimazole
Prevents association of iodine into the thyroglobulin. Prevents iodination and therefore production of T3 and T4.
What is tachyphylaxis?
A reduced sensitivity due to excessive exposure to an agonist.
What is suprasensitivity due to?
Excessive antagonist exposure or deprived exposure to agonist.
What is an example of an endogenous opioid?
Endorphins
What do opioids act on?
Mu opioid receptors
