MS Flashcards
Definition
CNS disorder
Progressive, degenerative neurological condition that compromises peoples ability to move
Autoimmune
Demyelinating disease
- destruction on myelin around neurons within the CNS
Aetiology and pathophysiology
Autoimmune
Demyelination of neurons + oligodendrocytes in CNS
Nerve conduction becomes reduced or absent
Remyelination can occur; completely or partially restore function
How is it diagnosed?
Clinical Assessment -> MRI
Problems
All types possible: dependent on location of lesion
Sensory:
1. vision - diplopia, monocular blindness or HH
Heat sensitivity: heat slows down nerve conduction velocity or neurons
Fatigue
males vs females
Females > males
Predisposing factors
- genetic
- some environmental
Sub-Classifications
Benign
Relapsing-Remitting (most common)
Secondary progressive (initially relapsing remitting -> then only relapses)
Primary progressive (constant decline)
UMN or LMN
UMN
Age of onset
young adulthood - 20-30 yrs
