Definition
Not a diagnosis!
Group of heterogeneous neurological disorders that result in impairments of movement, muscle tone and posture + comorbidities inc. pain
Most common childhood physical disability
Permanent
Aetiology and pathophysiology
non-progressive damage to the developing brain during antenatal, perinatal, early post natal
- hypoxia, genetic factors, infective conditions, bleeds or clots, accident or injury
non-progressive but presentation can change across the lifespan
How is it diagnosed
Early identification though history, hammersmith infant neurological examination, general movement assessment and MRI (sometimes)
Problems
Bilateral or unilateral possible
Motor (mainly)
- paresis
- abnormal movement: chorea, ataxia
- abnormal muscle tone (varies) generally hypotonia, dystonia, spasticity
How is it classified
- description of motor impairments
- typographic descriptors
- gross motor functional classification system (GMFCS E&R)
- gait classification system
