Guillain-Barre syndrome Flashcards
1
Q
PNS or CNS
A
PNS
2
Q
Definition
A
Rare PNS disorder
Peripheral nephropathy (damage to axons of peripheral nerves)
Polyneuropathy (lots of PNs compromised)
3
Q
Aetiology and pathophysiology
A
Abnormal immune response
antibodies and WBS attack myelin of peripheral nerve -> demyelination of peripheral nerves
leads to reduced or absent nerve conduction
4
Q
How is it diagnosed
A
- lumbar puncture testing CSF (high levels +)
- Nerve conduction study (NCS) or EMG
- abnormal nerve conduction
5
Q
Typical initial presentation
A
- relatively fast onset (peak at 4/52)
- bilateral
- LL weakness
6
Q
Problems
A
Bilateral - LL, UL, trunk and face/head
Sensory - somatosensory - tingling
Motor (LMNs)
- paresis
- abnormal muscle tone: hypotonia/flaccidity
- abnormal reflexes: hyporeflexia/areflexia
7
Q
Management
A
- Plasmapheresis (plasma-exchange)
2. immunoglobulin therapy -> improve immune system and reduce autoimmune response
