Movements of the Scapula Flashcards
What are the movements of the scapula associated with?
Clavicle and humerus
What acts to increase the should joint ROM?
Changing position of the glenoid fossa
What are the movements of the scapula?
Elevation and depression.
Protection and retraction.
Rotation
What is elevation and depression also accompanied with?
Small degree of rotation for correct positioning of glenoid fossa
What is involved in elevation of scapula?
Levator scapulae and trapezius
What is the fulcrum of movement for elevation?
Costoclavicular ligament
What is involved in depression of the scapula?
Pectoralis major and inferior fibres of serrates anterior, eccentric contraction of trapezius and levator scapulae
What muscles are involved in protraction?
Serrates anterior and pectoralis minor
What limits protraction of the scapula?
Anterior sternoclavicular ligament and the coracoclavicular ligament
What actions occur with protraction?
Pushing, punching and reaching
What muscles are involved in retraction of the scapula?
Transverse fibres of trapezius, rhomboid major and minor
When does axial rotation occur?
During abduction of the arm at the glenohumeral joint
What muscles are involved in lateral rotation of the scapula?
Ascending fibres of trapezius, serrates anterior
What muscles are involved in medial rotation of the scapula?
Eccentric control of descending trapezius fibres and serrates anterior
Concentric rhomboid and elevator scapulae
