Joints of the Pelvis Flashcards
What are the joints associated with the pelvis?
Sacroiliac Joint, Symphysis Pubis, Lumbosacral Joint and Sacrococcygeal Joint
What type of joint is the Sacroiliac Joint?
Synovial Plane Joint
What type of joint is the Symphysis Pubis Joint?
Secondary Cartilaginous
What type of joint is the Lumbosacral Joint?
Secondary Cartilaginous
What are the articular surfaces of the sacroiliac joint?
The auricular surfaces of the ilium and sacrum
What are the articular surfaces of the symphysis pubis joint?
Medial aspects of the pubic body with a fibrocartilaginous disc
What are the articular surfaces of the Lumbosacral Joint?
Inferior surface of the body of L5 with the superior surface of the sacrum, separated by an interventricular disc
What are the articular surfaces of the sacrococcygeal joint?
Inferior surface sacrum and coccyx
Describe the capsule of the sacroiliac joint?
Complete fibrous capsule surrounds the joint attaching to the articular margins
What are the ligaments involved in the sacroiliac joint?
Anterior and Posterior sacroiliac ligaments and accessory ligaments: Sacrotuberous and Sacrospinous
How is stability provided in the sacroiliac joint?
Provided by the wedge-shoe of the sacrum, interlocking articular surfaces and ligaments
What are the movements of the sacroiliac joint?
Slight gliding and rotation between the surfaces, during childbirth the pelvic inlet/outlet diameters increase
What are the ligaments involved in the symphysis pubis joint?
Superior and arcuate pubic ligaments
What are the movements in the symphysis pubis joint?
Very little movement, during childbirth the joint surfaces separate slightly
What are the ligaments involved in the lumbosacral joint?
Iliolumbar and lateral lumbosacral and all ligaments associated with joints between the vertebrae
